AGC PreCast Supplies 2,400 Precast Elements for Tema Port Expansion

Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority selected AGC PreCast Solutions as the primary supplier for the Tema Port Phase 2 expansion project, one of the largest infrastructure investments in West Africa in the past decade. Over an 18-month production and installation programme, our team manufactured and delivered 2,400 precast concrete elements including columns, beams, and hollow core slabs.

Scope of Supply

The supply programme covered three new berths designed to handle Panamax-class vessels with a combined throughput capacity of 1.2 million TEUs per year. AGC PreCast produced 480 precast columns ranging from 8 to 14 metres in height, 720 pre-stressed beams spanning up to 18 metres, and 1,200 hollow core slab units for terminal building floors and covered storage facilities.

All elements were designed in collaboration with the project structural engineers to meet Ghana Standards Authority specifications and the Port Authority's own structural design brief. Mix designs were adjusted for the marine environment, with enhanced chloride resistance achieved through supplementary cementitious materials.

Logistics and Installation

Delivering 2,400 elements to an active port construction site required careful sequencing. AGC PreCast worked closely with the site team to schedule just-in-time deliveries, minimising laydown area requirements and crane handling time. A dedicated quality inspector was stationed on-site throughout the installation phase to verify dimensional tolerances and connection details before each element was permanently fixed.

The project achieved a zero-defect rate on structural elements, and the final inspection by Bureau Veritas confirmed compliance with all design specifications. The Tema Port Phase 2 project stands as one of the most complex and high-profile contracts in AGC PreCast's 25-year history.
